Meansweeper is a unique, captivating online game that extends the ideas behind Minesweeper by adding a math-based aspect. Rather than just guarding yourself from hidden mines based on the numbers that detail how many mines are nearby, you are simply provided with a slightly more interesting clue: the mean (or average) of the hidden numbers in some region of tiles.
Each tile could be hiding a number, a blank, or a mine. The goal? Figure out the average values, determine the safest steps to take, and discover the entire board — without stepping on a mine.
Step 1: Learn About the Grid
You will see a grid of covered tiles. Some tiles contain numbers, some contain mines, and some are empty.
Step 2: Decode the Mean Clues
In this game, instead of giving you the number of adjacent mines (as in Minesweeper), Meansweeper gives you clues about the mean value of small regions. That mean value gives you the average of the numbers in the surrounding tiles.
For example, if the clue is “3.0” and it is adjacent to three tiles, the sum of those three tiles equals 9. What combination could provide you with that sum? Which tiles could contain the mines or zeros? This is your logic puzzle to solve!
Step 3: Use your Logic and Math.
Use mathematical logic to eliminate some combinations. What combinations of numbers could result in the average given? What tile can I safely click next? Think ahead, as one wrong click will end your game.
Step 4: Reveal all tiles that contain no mines.
Your goal, as with Minesweeper, is to reveal all the safe tiles without revealing a mine. The major difference is that you will be relying on means and averages as opposed to adjacent counts.
